Religious Studies Values Statement

The Fulwood Academy’s Religious Studies curriculum is designed to develop an extensive understanding of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs to prepare pupils for life in a multicultural, diverse society. In RS, pupils are encouraged to articulate their own views using evidence to support their beliefs so they are able to hold well-informed conversations about religion and worldviews whilst respecting the views of others. This helps pupils to develop many key skills such as empathy and communication which are incredibly important for them to progress through school and for future employment.

 

In RS, pupils will learn some of the key ethical issues in society today and understand what the different responses are to them. They will be given opportunities to debate and discuss different ethical issues and formulate their own opinions based upon these. The RS curriculum also reflects the intent of the Lancashire Agreed syllabus for Religious Education that ‘aims to support pupils’ personal search for meaning as they explore what it means to be human.’ They will do this through exploration of different worldviews and critically analysis what these views different religions hold.

 

The RS curriculum aligns with Ofsted’s three types of knowledge;

 

• Substantive knowledge: knowledge about various religious and non-religious traditions
• ways of knowing: pupils learn ‘how to know’ about religion and non-religion
• personal knowledge: pupils build an awareness of their own presuppositions and values about the religious and non-religious traditions they study

 

RS plays a vital role in supporting Spiritual, Moral and Social and cultural development and promoting British values through the curriculum through developing mutual respect and tolerance for different religions and worldviews.

 

The RS curriculum also aligns with the academy’s values of we care, we challenge and we commit which is shown through our schemes of work and lesson resources.
